Do you need a passport renewal? Renewing your expired US passport can be a complicated task if you do not have the right information or instructions. When renewing your passport, you will need to submit the DS-82 application form in any of the following ways: by regular mail, passport offices, or a regional passport agency.
It is important to know that only adult passport renewal applications are accepted as children’s passports cannot be renewed.
If the following requirements are true you can submit your passport application via mail:

Your current passport is not damaged (other than normal wear and tear)

The issuance date is not more than 15 years ago

You were age 16 or older when your passport was issued

You still have the same name, or can legally document your name change.

Your passport has NOT been limited as a result of damage, multiple passport thefts, or non-compliance with regulations.
If you do not meet the above requirements you have to apply for a new passport using the DS-11 passport form.

The time it takes to renew your expired passport depends on where and when you apply for your passport renewal. Applying via mail it could take as much as six weeks or more to get your passport renewed.
If you have an expedited travel plans you could apply by going to your regional passport agency with all of the required documents or you could apply by using one of our passport expediting companies to get your passport in as little as 24 hours.

How long before my passport expired should I renew it?
It is recommended that you renew your passport book nine months before your passport expires. This will give the State Department enough time to get your new passport back to you.
When I renew my passport will I get my old passport book back?
Yes in most cases you will get back your old passport book with a holes punch into it.
I’m behind in child support. Can I get a passport?
If you are behind in child support payments of $2,500 or more, you cannot get a passport.
How will my passport book and/or card be mailed back to me?
Newly-issued passport books are delivered using Priority Mail with Delivery Confirmation, unless you pay for Priority Express return service at time of application.
All passport cards will be mailed using First Class Mail. Passport cards cannot be delivered using Priority Express.
Renew a Passport from Outside the United States

U.S. citizens residing abroad (except those living in Canada) should renew their passports at the nearest U.S. Embassy or U.S. Consulate. Please visit their specific website for specific instructions.

U.S. citizens residing in Canada may submit Form DS-82 to the address listed on the form. Your check or money order must draw on U.S. financial institutions based in the United States and be payable in U.S. dollars.
