There are four basic types of promotion: 1) Advertising 2) Sales Promotion 3) Personal Selling 4) Publicity. Promotion is any form of communication a business or organization uses to inform, persuade, or remind people about its products and improve its public image.

Examples include contests, coupons, freebies, loss leaders, point of purchase displays, premiums, prizes, product samples, and rebates. Sales promotions can be directed at either the customer, sales staff, or distribution channel members (such as retailers).

Sales Promotion Strategies. There are three types of sales promotion strategies Push, Pull, or a combination of the two. A push strategy involves convincing trade intermediary channel members to push the product through the distribution channels to the ultimate consumer via promotions and personal selling efforts.

When brands give out promotional products to their customers, it leads to better brand recall, consumer loyalty, consumer engagement, and more business for the brand, at quite low costs.
