Food Grade Food Storage Buckets. There is a lot of misinformation out there about plastic buckets. Most of the controversy rages over whether a bucket is food grade or not. Most plastic containers, usually on the bottom, will have a number inside a small triangle. The #2 means it is made from HDPE plastic.

Many food grade plastic containers fall into the high density polyethylene or HDPE category. It has excellent chemical resistant properties making it suitable for a wide range of foods and other products. For example, most juice or milk containers and five gallon food buckets are made from HDPE.

This number will be between 1 and 7 and will be stamped inside a triangle of arrows. As a general rule, the numbers that are safe for use with food are 1, 2, 4, and 5. The best type of plastic for use in long-term food storage is high-density polyethylene (HDPE), which is indicated by the "2" symbol.

Never reheat food in plastic. Even if your food containers are labeled as one of the safe plastics, always transfer food to a glass or china dish before reheating in the microwave. All plastics contain possible harmful chemicals, and when heated, those chemicals can leech onto the food that is next to them.
