It can be difficult to prevent cradle cap since the cause is still a mystery. However, using a mild shampoo on the hair of your newborn every few days might prevent the scaly patches from forming. Never use anything soap or shampoo that is too strong unless directed by your pediatrician or medical provider.

Cradle cap appears as greasy, yellow and scaly patches on a young babys scalp. Over time the skin may become flaky and will easily peel or rub off. The condition is not contagious and is not believed to cause the baby any discomfort. It usually appears on the scalp but can also occur on the face, ears, neck, nappy area and in the skin folds.

The exact cause of cradle cap isnt known, but it is believed that it could be a result of pregnancy hormones left in the babys body. Some babies may retain these hormones from their mother in the months after their birth. The hormones may make the babys glands produce more sebum, which can result in cradle cap.

Cradle Cap appears as greasy, white or yellowish patches of dry skin. These patches are often crusty and may also be inflamed.

In most cases, cradle cap does not require medical attention. Within a few weeks or months, the skin condition should clear up on its own.
