Jeep, made for the Army, originated in Butler, Pa. Seventy years ago, the first of many millions of Jeeps saw the light of day. The origin of the sturdy little vehicles, which were universally used by all the allied armed forces during World War II.

In March 1941, the Army ordered 1,500 more, model name BRC-40, most of which were shipped to the Soviets to fight Germany. The first "Jeep" vehicles manufactured by the Bantam Motor Car Company, 1940.

The most widely held theory is that the military designation of GP begat the term "Jeep" and holds that the vehicle bore the designation "GP" (for "Government Purposes" or "General Purpose"), which was phonetically slurred into the word jeep.

The various types and models of Jeeps are specially chosen as a status symbol more than their reliability. The posh look and the detailed features have baffled many, but critics have rated it below several other adventure cars. However, the Jeep Wrangler has proven itself against the odds in both the rugged mountains and rocky terrains.
