He serves as chair of the UCI School of Medicine's Department of Radiation Oncology. Chen received his medical degree from Yale University's School of Medicine in New Haven, Conn. His research interests also include the role of human papillomavirus (HPV) in head and neck cancers. His 2017 study on de-escalation for HPV-positive cancer, the first to suggest a benefit in reducing radiation doses, is now standard protocol. He also has conducted numerous clinical trials on re-irradiation techniques for recurrent cancers of the head and neck. He serves on leadership committees for the National Cancer Institute, the Radiological Society of North America, the American Board of Radiology, and is a fellow of the American Society for Radiation Oncology.

Dr. Bryson has significant experience in leading large multicenter clinical trials and networks and developing clinical sites and laboratories. She is recognized as a national and international expert and leader in the field of HIV and perinatal transmission. She has made important and original scientific contributions to the field and served on many advisory committees and NIH Study Sections, and has been consistently funded by the National Institutes of Health, including numerous RO1 grants. Dr. Bryson has mentored numerous postdoctoral fellows and young faculty for successful careers in academic medicine. She was one of the original members of the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation heath advisory board and helped start the foundation with Elizabeth, Dr. Richard Stiehm, and two co-founders.
