Dr. Pfeffer is an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine for the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Prior to serving as AVP and CIO, he was the Chief Medical Informatics Officer for UCLA Health.</p> <p>Dr. Pfeffer graduated from Brown University with a degree in chemical engineering and earned his medical degree from Weill Cornell University Medical College. He completed his residency and chief residency in internal medicine at UCLA. Dr. Pfeffer is board certified in internal medicine and clinical informatics. Dr. Pfeffer is committed to medical student and graduate medical education and serves as the Associate Program Director for the UCLA Clinical Informatics Fellowship Program. Dr. Wael El-Nachef completed his undergraduate studies at the University of California, Berkeley, with a double major in Rhetoric and Public Health. He then completed medical school at Northwestern University and Internal Medicine residency training at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. He subsequently undertook a research fellowship at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, funded by the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, where he explored tissue engineering solutions to enteric neuropathies such as Hirschsprung disease. Dr. El-Nachef first joined UCLA for his clinical fellowship training in Gastroenterology, earning board certification in 2018. During his fellowship, he was admitted to the UCLA Specialty Training and Advanced Research program, which supported his graduate studies in the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Integrative Physiology. Working in the laboratory of Dr. Marianne Bronner at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), he was awarded a PhD in 2019 for his work on enteric neurogenesis in post-embryonic development. Dr. El-Nachef continues to perform basic science research at both Caltech and UCLA, with a focus on enteric nervous system homeostasis, degeneration, and regeneration. His clinical interests include gastrointestinal complications of neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease, and esophageal and gastrointestinal motility disorders.

Ira Kurtz, MD, FRCP, FASN, is Professor of Medicine, Chief of the Division of Nephrology, Factor Chair in Molecular Nephrology, and a member of the UCLA Brain Research Institute. Dr. Kurtz is a graduate of the University of Toronto, and completed his postgraduate training at both the University of California, San Francisco, and the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Kurtz has been a faculty member at UCLA since 1985 and is board-certified in Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine and in Nephrology by the American Board of Nephrology. Dr. Kurtz is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and the American Society of Nephrology, and is listed in Southern California Super Doctors. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation, the American Physiological Society, the Biophysical Society, and the American Society of Nephrology. Dr. Kurtz has authored over 300 scientific publications, book chapters, and abstracts. He is on the editorial board of several scientific journals and is an external reviewer of major scientific publications and grants. Dr. Kurtz?s primary areas of research are ion transport-related diseases, the physiology and biophysics of molecular transport processes in the kidney and extrarenal organs, structural biology, the atomic structure of membrane proteins, and the engineering development of a totally artificial kidney.
