Dr. Sherin U. Devaskar is Executive Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at UCLA. Hospital Appointments Physician-in-Chief, Mattel Children's Hospital Sherin U. Devaskar, MD is Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics, Mattel Executive Endowed Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. She is the Physician-in-Chief, Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA, and Assistant Vice Chancellor of Children’s Health, UCLA Health. She is also the Executive Director of the UCLA Children's Discovery and Innovation Institute (CDI). Dr. Devaskar is a highly accomplished pediatrician/neonatologist, researcher and educator. She was selected as the recipient of the 2021 John Howland Award and Medal for Highest Achievements in promoting child health as a leader, physician-scientist, mentor and clinician-educator. Dr. Devaskar's research is renowned for elucidating mechanisms and processes responsible for developmental origins of chronic childhood disorders such as obesity and diabetes with a recent emphasis on the effect of placental health on neurodevelopment. Her research is supported by National Institutes of Health (NIH). Dr. Devaskar has authored over 160 publications in peer-reviewed journals. She served as a member of the National Advisory Child Health and Human Development Council, National Institutes of Health, Chair of the NICHD-Maternal and Child Health Committee and Chair of the NIH-Human and Embryology Study Section. She was also the President of the American Pediatric Society and served on the International Pediatric Research Foundation Board. She is currently the President of the American Medical School Pediatric Department Chairs. Dr. Devaskar was elected to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in October 2012. Dr. Devaskar has a particular interest in academic development and focuses on supporting and mentoring fellows and junior faculty interested in becoming physician-scientists, clinician-researchers or educators. Dr. Devaskar serves on multiple UCLA, national and international committees. She served as the Chair of the Scientific Program Committee for the Pediatric Academic Societies. She was a member of the Perinatal-Neonatal Subsection of the American Board of Pediatrics. Dr. Devaskar served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Pediatric Research journal. Michael Teitell received B.S. and M.S. degrees from the UCLA College Honors Program as a Departmental Scholar in Chemistry and Biochemistry in 1985. He earned combined M.D. and Ph.D. degrees in the UCLA Medical Scientist Training Program in 1993. His graduate and early post-doctoral studies were with Dr. Mitchell Kronenberg at UCLA in Molecular and Cellular Immunology. Dr. Teitell was a Resident and Clinical Instructor in Anatomic Pathology at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School from 1993-1995. During this time he was a Research Associate with Dr. Richard Blumberg. From 1995-1997, Dr. Teitell was a Resident in Clinical Pathology at UCSF and a post-doctoral researcher with Dr. Joe Gray. From 1997-1999, he held a joint appointment at Children's Hospital of Los Angeles as a Pediatric Pathology Fellow and at UCLA as a Clinical Instructor in Pathology. He became an Assistant Professor in the UCLA Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in 1999. He was jointly appointed in the UCLA Department of Pediatrics in 2001 and was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 2004. He currently serves as Chief of the Division of Pediatric and Developmental Pathology, with board certification in anatomic, clinical and pediatric pathology. Dr. Teitell has received several important honors and awards. Among these are the David Paul Kane Scholar Award of the Jonsson Cancer Center Foundation (2000-2001), the Lymphoma Research Foundation Junior Faculty Award (2001-2002), the FOCIS/Millenium Pharmaceuticals Young Investigator Award in Genomics Research (2001-2002), a Scholar Award from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (2003-2008), election to the American Society of Clinical Investigators (2004) and a Margaret E.
