Clinical Expertise: Enterovirus infections, HIV therapy, bone and joint infections, viral myocarditis Bio: Dr. Paul Krogstad attended UCLA and received his Bachelor of Science in Cybernetics and a Master's Degree in Engineering. After leaving Los Angeles, he attended the Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana, where he also completed his training in Pediatrics. He trained as a specialist in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the University of Washington in Seattle, then returned to UCLA for additional postdoctoral training in human retrovirology. He joined the UCLA faculty in 1992 and is now a Professor in the departments of Pediatrics and Pharmacology. Dr. Krogstad's research has largely focused on molecular virology and the pathogenesis of viral diseases. His studies currently include evaluation of new treatments for HIV infected children and adolescents and the discovery of antiviral agents for enterovirus infections. In addition, he has collaborated with others in the study of Valley Fever (Coccidioidomycosis). Dr. Yeganeh, MD MPH is a visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Infectious Disease at the David Geffen School of Medicine. Her current research focuses on preventing transmission of HIV, Hepatitis, Syphilis, Gonorrhea and Chlamydia to infants through the implementation of TRIPAI, an initiative focused on involving male partners of pregnant women in prenatal care. Her research is currently taking place at collaborating research sites in Brazil but she has also worked in over 15 international settings including Lesotho, China, Honduras, South Africa and Iran. Dr. Yeganeh is an attending physician at Mattel Children's Hospital, teaching infectious disease fellows, pediatric residents and medical students. She is also the founder of the International Travel/Adoption Clinic at Mattel Children's UCLA Pediatric Specialists. Through her research, she has created close collaborations with both members of the School of Medicine, the School of Public Health, and School of Engineering, and will continue to perform research with new fellows both at UCLA and in Brazil. She has served as mentor to several students in training both at UCLA and in Brazil interested in promoting women’s health, and continues to work on research translating evidence based clinical interventions to policies optimizing the health of pregnant women and infants.

Dr. Wael El-Nachef completed his undergraduate studies at the University of California, Berkeley, with a double major in Rhetoric and Public Health. He then completed medical school at Northwestern University and Internal Medicine residency training at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. He subsequently undertook a research fellowship at Children's Hospital Los Angeles, funded by the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, where he explored tissue engineering solutions to enteric neuropathies such as Hirschsprung disease. Dr. El-Nachef first joined UCLA for his clinical fellowship training in Gastroenterology, earning board certification in 2018. During his fellowship, he was admitted to the UCLA Specialty Training and Advanced Research program, which supported his graduate studies in the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Integrative Physiology. Working in the laboratory of Dr. Marianne Bronner at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), he was awarded a PhD in 2019 for his work on enteric neurogenesis in post-embryonic development. Dr. El-Nachef continues to perform basic science research at both Caltech and UCLA, with a focus on enteric nervous system homeostasis, degeneration, and regeneration. His clinical interests include gastrointestinal complications of neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease, and esophageal and gastrointestinal motility disorders.
