To supply gas to a property it must first be connected to the gas grid. If the property is not connected to a gas grid then a Gas Distribution Network (GDN or GT) company can provide a connection from the nearest supply to the gas meter of your property

To find out which utility company currently supplies a property with gas or electric, you can call the Meter Number Helpline and provide your gas meter number to find out who your gas supplier is.

Ideally, the switch should take no longer than 17 days from the date you arranged to change supplier. This allows for a 14 day "cooling off period" where you can change your mind about switching. This comes after energy regulator Ofgem challenged gas and electricity companies to cut their switching times.

Having a smart meter doesn't affect your right to switch energy providers whenever you want. So if you've had a smart meter installed but you want to move to a new supplier, you will still be able to do so. However, you may find your smart meter loses its functionality and reverts to being a traditional meter.
