1. 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe

The Tahoe can carry up to nine people and their gear, tow a big trailer or boat, and will happily tackle everything from muddy roads to genuine dirt trails. But there’s a lot more to this SUV. For day-to-day use, buyers will be pleased to know that the Tahoe’s third row folds flat and this SUV does a better-than-expected job of accommodating child seats.

The Tahoe is a well-rounded vehicle that will satisfy most anyone, even if you never tow or venture into the dirt, thanks to its smooth ride and potent V8 engine. GM has pulled out all the stops with the 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe, pushing the limits of what is possible with this type of architecture while enhancing fuel efficiency, occupant safety and all-weather capability.

Body-on-Frame for the Modern Age

The recently redesigned Tahoe is a modern, spacious haven, with available niceties such as the intuitive MyLink connectivity system, Apple CarPlay, OnStar 4G LTE Wi-Fi, an 8-inch color touch screen and five USB ports. Heated and cooled seats are available, as are wireless phone charging and a rear-seat Blu-ray/DVD system.

2. Chevrolet Volt

Driving: It rides pretty well at motorway pace, and it doesn’t make a fuss about bigger potholes around town either. You only start getting thrown around when the going gets really rough, and it’s a pretty portly old hector, so wobblyness takes a while to settle despite otherwise solid damping.

You’ve a job to know whether the Volt is actually running or not because it’s silent. The transition from electric to petrol – when the battery runs out – is very smooth indeed and it remains super refined. You don’t really hear it until you’re above around 50mph. 

The powertrain makes light work of the Volt’s 1,750kg. Give it some beans and the Chevy responds with the kind of surge you’d associate with a run-of-the-mill petrol 2.0-litre. 0-31mph takes 3.1 seconds – where you’ll likely spend most of your time in a Volt – and it gets a fair old whack of torque too; 273lb ft, to be precise.

On the inside

There is no central rear seat, but other than that the cabin is spacious and the boot space acceptable for a car like this.

Everything feels pretty sturdy, despite some low-rent materials lower down.
 

3. Chevrolet Orlando

What is it?

As MPVs go, the Orlando defines cheap and cheerful. It’s not the most dynamically accomplished or desirable people carrier, but it’s certainly one of the most affordable ways into seven-seat family motoring. It’s comfortable and spacious, and Chevy’s Five-Year Promise means you’re sorted for aftercare for the first half a decade and 100,000 miles of ownership, which is hard to knock.

Given the choice, you’d still have a Ford C-Max or Citroen C4 Picasso, but the Orlando has the value edge.
 

Driving

Steer clear of the entry-level 1.8-litre petrol engine. It hasn’t got anywhere near enough muscle to shift the Orlando at a reasonable pace, it’s not particularly cheap to run and you’ll never sell it on a few years down the line. The 2.0-litre VCDi diesels are a far better bet. They come in 128 and 161bhp guise and, though the latter is the one to have, the lower-powered engine holds its own well enough, even if it is a little lacking in oomph further down the rev range. The diesels are far less stressed and more refined than the petrol, too.

The ride is, for the most part, pretty comfortable but the Chevy doesn’t handle rough surfaces as well as its rivals and feels unsettled at times. There’s less body roll than you’d expect from a big-budget MPV and the steering has more life in it than you’d think, but it’s too heavy at low speed, which makes parking trickier than it needs to be.
 

On the inside

The first two rows of seats are more than spacious enough, but the back pair aren’t much good for anyone outside their teens. Getting into the back isn’t as easy as it is in the class- topping MPVs either, because the seats don’t fold down individually – they’re on a less practical 60/40 split.

It’s comfortable enough up front and visibility is pretty good, but again, the quality of the materials and the general ambience in the cabin is somewhat low rent compared to your better quality Zafiras and C-Maxes. The headrests tuck in automatically when you fold the seats down, though, which is handy.
 

4. Chevrolet Camaro

Driving

Underneath the Euro-spec Chevy Camaro, there’s a 4.5-link independent rear end and its very own set of super-stiff dampers and a pair of repositioned and reshaped anti-roll bars. The good news? It corners.

Despite being developed at the Nürburgring, the Camaro soaks up the road with GT-like composure. But rear occupants might want to think twice before embarking on long journeys, as its a bit cramped.

There are two engines – LS3 and L99 – which are bolted to a six-speed manual and auto respectively. They’re pretty much the same, but the automatic gets VVT, which propels it to 62mph 0.2 seconds, erm, slower. Both are 6.2 litres – the manual gets 432hp and the auto 405hp – the stick-shift coupe takes 5.2 seconds to get to 62mph and the rag-top 5.4. The auto coupe does it in 5.4, and the convertible in 5.6.

On the inside

Can’t really carry four in comfort, due to a very taxed rear seating arrangement, but two people can fit snugly. And let’s be honest, this car isn’t for hauling kids and dogs and things.

The A-pillar trim and plastic door panels flex with a gentle prod, and wobbly stitching abounds. The convertible roof flaps around when it’s down, too. Which is all a bit of a shame, because poor interior fixture quality isn’t endemic of today’s GM crop.

 
5. Chevrolet Aveo

Driving

Chevrolet has an advantage over GM sister company Vauxhall here, for the Aveo actually uses the next-generation Corsa platform. This means it is pretty competent in all areas, with a sophisticated and mature feel that’s worlds apart from the dreadful old one. Ride and handling are up to scratch, and it flows through bends with decent accuracy despite a bit too much body roll for European tastes.

The engines are far better too: for the first time, there is a 1.3-litre turbodiesel, which proves torquey and useful (albeit rather rattly with it). Most buyers will choose petrol though, particularly the able new 1.2-litre. This is again a bit vocal but still pretty impressive for a budget supermini shopper.

On the inside

As with the smaller Chevrolet Spark, the Aveo has a very modern and good-looking interior. It carries over the motorcycle styling theme with a combined digital speedo and analogue rev counter pack. Thanks to a flowing dash and choice of contrast plastics, it all looks very modern indeed, particularly as it uses some controls and switchgear also seen on the Vauxhall Insignia. Just don’t look too closely, as the plastics lack the solid quality of a VW Polo or Kia Rio. Space-wise, it’s fine up front but perhaps a little tight in the rear for taller teens. The 290-litre boot is more than class- competitive for capacity, though.
